People across the political spectrum desire meaningful economic change. Restoration is the process of creating that change, by balancing social, environmental, and economic needs at a systems level. The Economic Restoration Institute pursues systemic change through collaborative work with business and industry leaders, government staff at multiple levels, non-governmental organizations (NGOs), and others to develop regional solutions tailored to the future, not the past.

The Right Time to Evolve

A wide range of natural, economic, and social disturbances are expected to threaten our communities in this turbulent century. Some of this is summarized in “The Pins that Popped Sri Lanka’s Balloon Economy.” As stressful as these disruptions are, we face them knowing they are necessary to restructuring our economies to a sustainable state. The Economic Restoration Institute was founded to help communities, businesses, and industries navigate this turbulence, in ways that increase resistance and resilience to the turbulence we face.

Our Mission

ERI’s mission is “To restore regional economies to a sustainable state, where industrial, social, and environmental needs are in balance.” This mission is supported by three service areas: Regional & Industrial Planning, Sustainable Business Ventures, and Education & Research. A restored economy is more resistant to global and national disruptions (turbulence) and balances critical needs such as resource-use efficiency, job security, food and energy sovereignty, and habitat protection. Economic restoration solutions provide more fulfilling opportunities for the diversity of people we call friends, neighbors, coworkers, and family.

A Brief History

ERI’s founder, John Giordanengo, has worked in the conservation and ecological restoration industry for over 30 years, including small business development and non-profit ventures. Over that time, like many of us, he questioned the root causes of some of our most chronic failures: habitat loss, soil degradation, low recycling rates, homelessness and mental health challenges, run-away wealth gaps, growing political tensions across the globe, and more. Oddly, those challenges remain a constant source of motivation to dig deeper, and apply the foundational lessons from ecosystems and economies to forge a sustainable economic future. This led to the founding of the Economic Restoration Institute as a non-profit organization dedicated to systemic change; person by person, business by business, industry by industry, and region by region. I am eternally grateful to be working alongside such a talented and committed board of directors, collaborative colleagues, and supportive partners to help fulfill our mission.
